Monument Square is located at the head of Main Street in downtown North Adams, Massachusetts. Over the years Main Street has transformed from a tree-stumped and rooted road to providing the ever-growing population with homes, hotels, restaurants, pubs, theatres, drug stores, and department stores.
Monument Square is surrounded by the Congregational, Baptist, and Methodist churches, and the North Adams Public Library. It intersects Main Street with East Main and Church Streets.
In the center of it all stands the Civil War Soldiers' Monument. The statue was dedicated to the town of North Adams on July 4, 1878, the same year North Adams became a town. This symbol of our local heritage has been overshadowed by the popularity of the Hoosac Tunnel. They are both equally important historic landmarks. Where the Hoosac Tunnel claimes ingenuity, the Soldiers' Monument claims pride. Together they radiate commitment, determination, steadfastness, and a sense of community.
This site was created on September 8, 2005. The mission of this website is to educate the visitor about the Soldiers' monument at Monument Square. More research is being conducted. More photos are needed. There is commentary to add, and I hope to include an exclusive interview. Please stop by often and watch it grow!
